Have you ever attempted to “multitask”: to do two or more things at once? I used to, because I thought I was being smart. After all, like everyone else in our country, I was very busy, so I thought it only wise to do as many things as possible at the same time. Do you know what I discovered?
I was bad at it!
A few years ago, I attended a Chamber of Commerce event that was being hosted by two ladies who run a very successful company. They especially concentrate on Time Management issues. They had everyone in the room do two experiments. One of them had everyone pair up, with one person separating two decks of cards that had been shuffled together, while their partner timed the process. (Then we switched roles.) Afterwards, we were given the same task, but this time while I was separating the two decks, my partner asked me VERY BASIC math questions. The result? It took the people in the room an average of 50-100% longer to do the task.
The trainers taught us that the result of a lot of research on multitasking worldwide showed that, on average, it takes 30% LONGER to do two things at once, when compared to doing each task separately. Not only that, but there were FAR FEWER mistakes when each task was done…with FOCUS!
Years ago I learned an acronym for FOCUS:
Follow
One
Course
Until
Successful
You see, when you truly focus – when you concentrate on doing one task at a time exceptionally well – your chances of success go way up! More good things just seem to happen to you. More people catch your Vision, because they see your focused effort toward attaining your Dreams in life.
I love what the late Zig Ziglar said:
“Don’t become a wandering Generality. Be a meaningful Specific.”
You can only do what Zig described by focusing on what you want to become – which leads me to my last point.
If you don’t know who you want to become in life, decide now. Take some time to determine what you want your future to look like. Then start focusing on serving others, one at a time. You will be blessed with the results.
(If you really want help with this process, I truly believe my book can help you.)
