(The following is some advice for people with Home-Based Businesses.)

Let’s talk a while about events. The first thing to know about any event that includes guests is that the event is NOT about you! They are put together for your guests. As a result, every business presentation is built with one thing in mind: the guest. They are not structured to entertain you, the distributor – nor are they to train you in how to build your business. (That is the reason for Training Events.)

Once you realize this, everything changes. You need to understand that you are part of a Team: the local Team. You are also part of your own Team. Let’s say that you bring a guest to your sponsor’s home, who is doing a business presentation with guests and other distributors. You are part of that Team at that event.

When you are part of a Team, you do what is best for the Team – not what is best for you. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts for these events:

DO:

– Be on time (that means at least 5 minutes early). Many times I was able to glean some extra insight from successful people by coming early to events, when there were not many people there yet.

– Pay attention to the speaker.

– Laugh at jokes – even if you have heard them before.

– Take notes. KEY POINT: guests actually many times spend more time looking at other distributors in the room than they do the presenter. Their attitude is: “If the distributors aren’t interested, why should I be?”

– Watch the presentation yourself.

– Sit up front. Exception: if someone comes with a guest and there are no more seats up front, please go to the back of the room if you are not with a guest yourself. You want to fill up the front of the room first, so that the late-comers are not forced to go down front where the empty seats are, and interrupt the presentation as a result.

– Introduce your guests to other people before the event.

– Bring your guests after the meeting immediately to your sponsor, so that he or she can walk them through some post-event questions.

– Dress appropriately.

– Clap for people who are introduced, and again after they stop speaking.

DO NOT:

– Talk to other people during the event.

– Interrupt the presentation – whether it be by asking questions during the presentation, or by having your cell phone go off during the event.

– Play with your phone.

– Go to sleep. If you are especially tired, please sit in the back of the room and ask your neighbor to awaken you quickly should you doze off. There is nothing quite like doing a presentation, and having everyone hear someone snoring!

Always remember to treat others the way you want to be treated. One day you, too, may be hosting many events just like these.

Keep believing in yourself, and in your Dreams!
