For any of you who have worked in Corporate America, you know how things traditionally work. Back-stabbing, undermining another’s efforts and office politics rule the day. Anything is fair game as long as the result gets you ahead in the race to the top of the corporate ladder.

Then you become a business owner. If you have not learned this yet, let me be the first one to teach you: being an entrepreneur is just the opposite! The best way to get ahead is actually to be nice. Yes, I said the word Nice. You really do want to talk well of others – of everybody: your customers, your suppliers, your Team Members, even your competition. When you build up others – when you “Edify” them – it creates a community of positive, like-minded people. It creates Unity. Everyone wins. This is quite a bit different from most peoples’ work places.

Here is an example from the Network Marketing Industry. Let’s say that you had two people who told you that they were “really going to try” to come to that evening’s event. You are all excited. However, your guests do not come, but another distributor who is not on your Team does have a guest there. After the event, that distributor introduces you to his or her guest. What should you say? How should you conduct yourself? Let’s face it: you are already down because your guests did not come, and now here is another distributor who wants you to speak to their guest. What do you do?

Well, let me ask you something: if it were the other way around, what would you want that other distributor to say to your guest? As you can see, the Golden Rule applies here too. What would you do? You should EDIFY the other distributor. Always. Without fail. Even if you are down. You establish some rapport, then you talk about how fortunate the guest is to have such a talented person as a business partner and mentor. You look for – and find – anything that is true and positive about the distributor to mention to the guest.

One more thing before I end this message: always remember to be positive at events. By doing that, you are actually Edifying your Company through whom you are being able to own your own distributorship. Look at the difference to someone’s guest when you answer this question two ways:

– Guest: “So, how long have you been a distributor with this
company, and what Rank are you?”

– You: “I have been in for two years, and I am still just a
distributor.”

versus

– You: ” I have been part of this program for two years, but I
have just recently decided to work this as a real business. As
a matter of fact, I am working on becoming an Executive (or
whatever your Rank goal is) in the next 90 days!”

When you say something similar to the second answer, you are helping the guest to have hope and belief that this opportunity will work for him or her as well. You are edifying the Company, too.

Start today Edifying wherever you can – at home, at your job, in your community – as well as with your Company and other distributors. You will be amazed at the difference it will make!
