Expectations.
We all have them. About our mates. About our children. About our careers.
And, yes, about Ourselves.
But what do YOU expect?
Do you ever think about it? If you are like most people, the answer is probably No. I mean, we are all so very busy living our lives, who really has the time to sit around and think about what it is that they are expecting FOR themselves – much less FROM themselves?
Well, I guess that answer depends on what you want to accomplish with your life.
You see, the most successful people I know MAKE THE TIME to self-reflect. They do not do it out of ego. On the contrary, most of the highly successful people I know in every area of life make the time in order to determine how they can SERVE better. To serve more people. To serve as much as humanly possible.
Here is a quote I heard many years ago. It took me some time truly to understand it at the deepest level due to my youth and lack of experiences in life.
“You do not get what you WANT; you get what you EXPECT.”
Once upon a time, a young man and his Dad were playing golf. The son stepped up to the tee, and proceeded to slice the ball terribly into the trees. Upon doing that, he said to his Dad, “I KNEW I was going to do that.”
His Dad slapped him on the back of his head and said, “Then why did you hit the ball? If you expected to slice the shot, you should have stepped away from the tee, changed your expectation to seeing the ball go straight down the fairway, and then hit the ball.”
That is a cute story with a message, but what I want you to take away from the story is a question for yourself:
“In what area(s) of my life am I ‘slicing the ball into the trees’?”
It may be in your Faith Walk. It may be in one or more of your Relationships. It may be in the area of Money, your Career, or your Health.
It may be in many – or all – of these areas.
The cool thing about answering this question for yourself is that you now know where to start. As the late Rev. Robert Schuller liked to say, “Beginning is half done.”
Decide TODAY to start changing your expectations about the areas of your life that need some help. Then TAKE ACTION to create the changes that help you become the best version of you – the version that God intends you to become.
You can do it. I believe in you.
