As many people are starting their own businesses here at the beginning of the year, I thought I would discuss some Best Practices of home-based businesses.
First, I would strongly suggest that you commit to building your business for one full year – without focusing on the results. I know to many people that sounds unwise; however, you must learn that it takes time to become successful at anything – especially a business. Do not get me wrong: I do not mean just go blindly and hope for the best. I mean go build your business while learning the skills, but do not slow down or stop just because your results may not be awesome in your first year. Remember that Michael Jordan – one of the best basketball players in the history of the sport – did not even make his high school team the first year he tried out!
Secondly, I would suggest that you commit (there is that word again) to new habits that you do EVERY DAY:
– use your own products;
– share your products with at least one person;
– share your business with at least one person, and;
– work on developing a better you.
The first three do not need more information, but the last one does if you are new to owning your own business.
Most people do business with people they Know, Like and Trust. In order to have people want to do business with you, it is wise to become a better version of yourself. The best ways to do that include reading books and listening to audios that focus on Personal Development. Some topics you may want to consider include People Skills, Confidence, Character, Leadership, Networking and Relationships. There are many more, but these would be the areas in which I suggest you start.
Lastly, here is some advice that I heard years ago that still applies today: “Let go of what other people think!” People laughed at the Wright Brothers – until they flew a plane. They laughed at Thomas Edison – until he invented the incandescent light bulb. Some people may laugh at you, or put you down because they think that you are making a mistake, that owning your own business does not work. The truth is that most people who say this are actually afraid that you will SUCCEED at this. As a result, they will look bad by comparison, because you went for your Dreams and made them happen – while they stayed home, watched TV, and let their own Dreams slip away.
If you will follow these tips, I strongly believe that you will find your footing in your business, and create a profitable venture. It does take commitment, work and time, but the effort is worth it. Focus on your Dreams, do the work, and seek wise counsel.
You can do it. Make it happen. I believe in you!
